Here is one rather special Mercury Cougar. This is an un-restored, garage kept, Western car that is in very good condition. I am listing this for a long time customer of mine who purchases parts for his collection of Cougars from us on a regular basis. I am taking no commission and charging no fee, the title is in the owners name and all proceeds will go to him. Mr. Howell, (the owner) purchased this car from an estate about two years ago. He has since spent several thousand dollars making this car 100% road worthy. The short list includes; new brakes, tires, wheels, transmission, carpet, battery, hoses, belts, fluids and other like items needed to get a car going that has been in storage for over two decades. Please enjoy the pictures I have posted below and take the time to read the many comments.
A few minor custom touches have been added such as 15" Magnum 500 wheels in place of the hubcaps, tinted windows, custom exhaust and the removal of a couple of factory emblems to give it a "clean" look. The only major change would be the color which was changed to this pleasant shade of green many years ago. The original color was yellow.
The paint is in good shape but does show a few minor scratches and chips. It does not need to be repainted and there is no rust pimples showing anywhere in the paint or evidence of rust repair.
This Cougar starts, stops, runs and drives excellent! It is ready to be taken anywhere at anytime and a cross country trip would be comfortable and most likely without incident.
This car shows no evidence of ever having been in any kind of fender bender up front. That is the original chrome on the front bumper!
I can find no evidence of any filler in the fenders, they line up very straight.
The rear bumper also sports the original chrome and this car has never been impacted from the rear.
I did find evidence of a dent in the front of this quarter panel down low. We replaced a dented wheel arch moulding and discovered it had had previous work done here long ago. This is the only place on the entire car where we found any previous damage of any kind and I do classify it to have been minor. We want no surprises of any kind when you take possession of this car.
These factory sport mirrors for the passenger side are highly sought after these days. This is a factory installed option to this car and is in mint condition.
These third generation Cougars are so comfortable to drive compared to the earlier cats... This one is very smooth, you can tell that it has never been abused.
The carpet and dash cover are the only new items in the interior. Yes, that is real leather...
The rim-blow steering wheel has no cracks and the original switch is in perfect working order.
Notice the seam separation on the lower part of the driver side seat. 71-73 Cougars are easier to find good used seat covers as the driver is the same as the passenger seat.
The Marti Report (posted below) shows that this car came with a AM-FM. At first glance this looked to me as if it was the correct unit but... It is really an after-market AM-FM 8 track from the day! Yes it does work.
The odometer shows 137845 and we believe this to be accurate. Plan on it having a few more miles as we have been driving it often!
This car came factory equipped with a 3.25 traction lock. We have elected to change it over to a 2.75 open rear for fuel economy (did I mention we were driving it often?). The original unit will be included but should have a new ring and pinion gear before being reinstalled.
While not being a heavily optioned car it has all the "right" options. The Cobra Jet / C-6 drive-train combination is legendary. The XR7 package has always been a favorite with Cougar fans and the addition of a tilt column, console, disc brakes and delay wipers make this a really Classy Cat !
Hmmm... Wonder if the previous owner was a golfer? No rust in the trunk, trunk lid, tail panel or gutter. This is a rare find in a coupe but finding a convertible this rust free is amazing!
Not pictured but included is the jack and spare.
The motor and transmission are numbers matching to the car. The carburetor is the only major component I can find that has been changed.
This year of Cougar / Mustang is notorious for rust in the aprons. I can find none on this car, not even under the battery.
These spread bore carburetors are actually good on gas "if" you can keep your foot out of it... Notice the original heat shield pictured below.

Shipping is a breeze these days. I have the connections to get it done right the first time and even though fuel has gone through the roof, shipping a classic across the Country is less money than you may think. Figure $1400 to the East Coast and less the closer you are. I have shipped many Cougars to Australia, Europe and beyond and it has always been a painless process. Make sure and check out my other ebay user name "westcoastclassicinc" before you bid. The appraisal done on this car 3 months ago came in at $21,000.00. Our reserve is high... But! Keep in mind the top bidder may get a second chance offer so do not be dismayed if you do not win this car at auctions end as you may just get lucky. I will be presenting all legitimate offers to the owner, the end decision ultimately is up to the owner. Thanks for viewing! Don Rush 503-463-1130 West Coast Classic Cougar in Salem Oregon
The sequential turn signals work perfectly.
The paint while not perfect gets compliments all the time. The smoked glass and black top really go well with the interior and exterior color.
The tires are brand new 245/60/15 on the rear and 235/60/15 on the front.
This shot is of the inside of the front driver side fender. Very clean.
This shot is of the bottom side of the battery. Very unusual to find them this clean. I love un-restored cars that have not been "messed with".
The 4V Cougars all came with staggard shocks from the factory.
The drain hole located on this driver side trunk drop off looks great but the passenger side appears to have been plugged at one time. This is the only minor rust you will find on this car. Incredible...
The front suspension is 100% tight. No vibrations or slack of any kind. No vibrations or squeaks. Very pleasnt to drive on long trips.
Thank you for visiting our ebay auctions! Since 1990 we have dismantled over 1000 1967 - 1979 Mercury Cougars as well as having assimilated many private collections into our ever growing inventory. Since 2001 we have been rapidly expanding our reproduction and restored parts inventory to a level never before achieved. Our latest endeavor has been to document every part ever found on a 1967 - 1973 Cougar on our website, down to the most insignificant nut bolt and clips. Each week we list several items here on ebay from our used, NOS, restored and reproduction inventory. Often these items are listed at a discount from what you will find them for on our online catalog.
